President Chairman, Co-Founder
M. Jan Rumi, President and Chairman of CER was born in Bangladesh and came to USA for education at an early age. He went to Berea College, Kentucky and Purdue University, Indiana for his Undergraduate (BA degree in Mathematics with a minor in Business) and graduate education (MS degree in Computer Science with a focus in Business Education) respectively. Jan then moved into corporate life leading up to serving as the Senior Manager and practice leader of Grant Thornton’s (www.grantthornton.com ) business advisory services practice in Honolulu. After over 35 years of for-profit business experience, Jan was keen in establishing an agency that would make a difference in people’s lives. And that’s the beginning of CER. Jan, co-founded CER in 2007. Besides CER, Jan serves as the Honorary Consul of Bangladesh and Morocco. He is also the co-author of Wising Up – A Youth Guide to Good Living. www.wisingup.com.
Aliman Sears was born in Detroit, Michigan. He was educated at universities in the USA and Belgium. He has a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, a Master’s Degree in Philosophy & Ethics, and a Master’s Degree in Psychology. He is an Adjunct Professor at Chaminade University, Honolulu. He's a Writer and a runner. He's a life-long meditator and in his late 20s was shown in meditation that he should be involved in Social Work, so he switched careers from Marketing & Natural Foods, and he followed that calling into Social Work. He co-founded CER in 2007. He is a Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner (CPRP), and a Certified Trainer for the Crisis Prevention Institute.
Originally from Portland, Oregon, and educated at the University of San Francisco, she joined CER’s family, to provide data analysis, reporting and organizational support. Mission driven to serve the severely mentally ill on Oahu, CER provides Claire with the latitude to effect change within an agency truly coming together as a team of mindfully respectful professionals. Claire Fujita believes in collective action and the strength of dedicated community members to effect positive change for Hawaii’s most underserved populations.
After spending many years on the mainland, Fayez returned to Honolulu to help CER with their growth strategy, medical billing, and financial analysis. He finds it incredibly fulfilling to leverage his corporate finance background into CER so that it can become a more sustainable and effective organization providing the highest level of care and support to clients, especially those that severely underserved. Fayez is an alumnus of Saint Louis High School and obtained his BS in Chemistry from the University of Puget Sound. He earned his MBA from the Shidler School of Business and also has the designation of Chartered Financial Analyst and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst.
Director of Programs
Mary Krieger, Director of Programs, born in Eugene, Oregon and raised throughout the west coast due to her parent’s nomadic lifestyle, relocated to Hawaii in 2012 and joined the CER team in 2013. She attended Saint Martin’s University earning her Bachelor in Psychology, graduating Summa Cum Laude, and a Master of Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma. Mary has a passion for providing holistic and inclusive care to Hawaii’s community and believes in creating change through advocacy.
Integrated Clinic Operations Manager
Stephanie Tsai, Integrated Clinic Operations Manager was born and raised in New York City before moving to Hawaii with her family as a teenager. She attended the University of Hawaii and is a retired substance abuse counselor with prior credentialing through NAADAC, ACCBO, for both counseling and clinical supervision. In 1999 she started developing dual diagnosis facilities in both Oregon and Hawaii with an emphasis on creating a "one stop shop" environment offering Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient, Mental Health, and Primary Care services under one roof. She was drawn to Community Empowerment Resources because of a shared commitment to delivering quality integrated services to those with serious and persistent mental illnesses and the opportunity to work with mindfully, respectful professionals as they endeavor to provide progressive and inclusive healthcare that empowers individuals entrusted to them to lead fuller lives.
Community-Based Case Manager (CBCM)
Erica was originally born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She earned her Bachelor's in Science at the University of California, San Diego and has two years of experience working as a clinical research lab assistant and lab manager at the San Diego Veteran Affairs Health Care System. While there she oversaw the data collection and entry for Military Sexual Trauma related PTSD and Combat-related PTSD populations. She left San Diego and the VA to complete her Master's in Counseling with a Specialization in Forensic Psychology from Adler University in Chicago, Illinois. She completed her clinical hours at the Cook County Correctional Facility by facilitating psychoeducational and process group therapy to adult male inmates. She also worked at St. Leonard's, a historical men's transitional center, that housed men recently released from long term prison sentences. There she provided individual psychotherapy and facilitated Anger Management groups for the residents. During her second year of her Master's Program, Erica was also a research assistant where she helped facilitate a Social Justice Exclusion Simulation and collected census data comparing demographics to crime rates. Lastly, she wrote a thesis aimed at hypothesizing the connection between placing undiagnosed/untreated children in Special Education classes and increasing their likelihood of trauma, dropping out of school, substance use, and criminality. After she earned her Master's Degree, Erica began searching for Forensic Psychology related employment back on the West Coast. She found CER's ICM+ pilot program on the internet and sent her resume to RH. After being told more about CER and CER's mission, Erica moved to Hawaii in 2018 and has been with CER since. As the CBCM Team Lead, Erica is most passionate about investing in her team of case managers (i.e providing evidenced based clinical trainings, ongoing supervision, and building team morale) so that they may provide the best support and care to CER clients.
